SUMMARY STATEMENT
The Academic Division Director is responsible for assisting the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services (VPAASS) in advancing and implementing the educational mission of Hagerstown Community College. The Academic Division Director provides comprehensive leadership, supervision, and administrative oversight for an assigned academic division in support of the College's mission, vision, and strategic priorities. The Director is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, evaluating, and continuously improving instructional programs and services; supervising and evaluating faculty and staff; and overseeing divisional operations, including curriculum, assessment, accreditation, scheduling, budgeting, enrollment initiatives, grant activities, and community partnerships. The Director collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to promote academic excellence, student success, workforce responsiveness, and institutional effectiveness while ensuring compliance with college policies, collective bargaining agreements, accreditation standards, and applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
The next Academic Division Director of Math & Science will be a visible, engaged, and collaborative servant leader who supports faculty success, promotes accountability, and keeps students at the center of divisional planning and decision-making. This individual will lead faculty and staff in a union environment with integrity, consistency, transparency, and respect while effectively interpreting and applying College policies and negotiated agreements.
The ideal candidate will possess teaching, academic, or professional experience in mathematics or science and understand the opportunities and challenges associated with leading programs in these disciplines. This leader will articulate a compelling vision for the division, align its work with the College’s mission and strategic priorities, and guide faculty and staff through curriculum development, assessment, program improvement, grant management, enrollment planning, resource allocation, and instructional innovation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
A.    Leadership and Administration
1.    Provide leadership for the academic and operational functions of the division. 
2.    Implement institutional strategic goals, annual priorities, and academic initiatives within the division. 
3.    Facilitate effective communication among faculty, staff, administration, students, and external stakeholders. 
4.    Conduct regular division meetings and participate in institutional governance and leadership meetings. 
5.    Serve as an advocate for students, faculty, and the division while supporting institutional priorities. 
6.    Lead division planning efforts and prepare annual unit plans, reports, and productivity analyses and other required documentation.
7.    Use divisional data, performance indicators, and assessment to inform decision-making, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement. 
B.    Faculty and Staff Supervision
1.    Recruit, hire, orient, supervise, mentor, and evaluate faculty and staff. 
2.    Conduct classroom observations and performance evaluations in accordance with college policies and applicable collective bargaining agreements. 
3.    Make recommendations regarding promotion, tenure, retention, and disciplinary actions. 
4.    Support professional growth and development opportunities for faculty and staff. 
5.    Ensure compliance with faculty workload, evaluation, and contractual obligations.
6.    Oversee faculty responsibilities associated with specialized instructional environments, including classrooms, facilities, equipment, and other resources, to ensure their effective, safe, and appropriate support of academic programs.
C.    Academic Leadership
1.    Provide instructional leadership for programs within the division. 
2.    Lead the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of academic programs and instructional services.
3.    Lead curriculum development, revision, implementation, and assessment activities. 
4.    Ensure academic quality, integrity, and rigor across instructional offerings. 
5.    Lead efforts to strengthen faculty use of effective, innovative, and student-centered instructional practices.
6.    Lead academic program review and continuous improvement initiatives. 
7.    Oversee dual enrollment instructional offerings and faculty, ensuring compliance with applicable College policies, institutional agreements, and recognized standards, including National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) standards, as appropriate.
8.    Oversee accreditation, regulatory, and program approval activities.
9.    Ensure divisional academic practices and operations align with applicable college policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
D.    Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness
1.    Provide leadership for Student Learning Outcomes Assessment (SLOA) activities within the division. 
2.    Ensure assessment plans, reports, findings, action plans, and supporting documentation are completed and maintained. 
3.    Utilize assessment data and other performance indicators to inform programmatic improvements and resource decisions. 
4.    Support general education and program learning outcomes assessment processes. 
5.    Monitor and evaluate divisional assessment and effectiveness measures.
6.    Maintain required divisional records, assessment documentation, and reports.
E.    Student Success and Enrollment Management
1.    Lead and support student recruitment, retention, completion, and progression initiatives. 
2.    Collaborate with advising, admissions, enrollment, and student support services to address student needs and promote student success. 
3.    Monitor program enrollment, completion, retention and other student success indicators. 
4.    Assist in resolving student concerns related to academic programs and faculty matters. 
5.    Promote equitable access, student achievement, and student-centered practices.
6.    Collaborate with appropriate College offices to identify enrollment opportunities and address program demand and capacity.
7.    Lead and coordinate divisional efforts to promote academic programs, strengthen program visibility, and support enrollment growth in collaboration with faculty, admissions, marketing and communications, advising, and other appropriate College offices.
F.    Scheduling and Instructional Operations
1.    Lead the development, review, and maintenance of credit class schedules. 
2.    Oversee the efficient utilization of faculty, facilities, equipment, and instructional resources. 
3.    Analyze and anticipate course offering, enrollment, and staffing needs to meet student and institutional requirements. 
4.    Direct and coordinate divisional instructional operations to support effective and efficient delivery of academic programs.
G.    Budget and Resource Management
1.    Develop, administer, and monitor division budgets. 
2.    Review and approve purchasing and resource requests in accordance with college policies and established authority. 
3.    Assess and prioritize equipment, technology, software, instructional materials, facilities, and staffing needs. 
4.    Ensure responsible and efficient stewardship of institutional resources.
5.    Align divisional resource allocation with program needs, student success, institutional priorities, and available resources.
H.    Grants and External Partnerships
1.    Participate in the development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of grant-funded initiatives. 
2.    Foster relationships with business, industry, educational, governmental, and community partners. 
3.    Collaborate with external partners to identify workforce needs and support responsive academic programs and initiatives.
4.    Support advisory committees and external stakeholder engagement activities. 
5.    Represent the College in professional, community, workforce, and state-level activities related to the division.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate discipline, education, administration, or a closely related field or the willingness to work towards degree if hired. Academic preparation and discipline-specific credentials may vary based on the programs and disciplines within the assigned division. Prior faculty experience and demonstrated academic or professional expertise in a discipline represented within the division are strongly preferred. A doctoral degree or other advanced discipline-specific credential is preferred when appropriate to the academic focus and expectations of the division.
 
Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, program leadership, or academic administration. Experience supervising and evaluating personnel. Experience with curriculum development and assessment processes. Demonstrated success in academic planning, budget management, and student success initiatives.
 
SKILLS AND ABILITIES 
Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, organizational, planning, and project management skills. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, academic program review, accreditation, and effective instructional practices. Demonstrated ability to analyze data, evaluate information, exercise sound judgment, and make evidence-based decisions.
 
Knowledge of budget development and resource management principles. Proficiency with current educational technologies, learning platforms, and institutional information systems. Ability to interpret and apply College policies, procedures, accreditation standards, and negotiated agreements. Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a complex, collaborative academic environment.
